Your giving can make a difference

I first heard of Lebers Congenital Amaurosis (LCA) about 7 years ago when I treated a small patient- three years old at the time- who was diagnosed with the disease.  We were evaluating her for hearing loss which appeared neural in nature and was coinciding with decreasing vision.  During 16 years of working in health care, she was the only patient I had come across with LCA.

Realizing recently that we have many things in common including our home towns, I learned that a new friend in town has a daughter with LCA.  However her particular strain, RDH12, is very rare.  Researchers are working hard to find a cure for what will otherwise become a world of blindness for her daughter and others with RDH12.  What gave me hope was learning that researchers have found a cure for other types of LCA and it is quite possible that they could find a cure for RDH12 during Finley's lifetime.  But not without funding.

HearSmart Audiology gladly has donated to The RDH12 Fund for Sight today and I hope you will too.  Click here for information on how to donate and make a difference.  To read more about Finley's story, you can visit her website, Finley's Fighters.

Consider coming out on June 8, 2014 at 1PM for a 5K Run/Walk Family Picnic Fundraiser on the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail in Chelmsford.  From what I understand, last year's event was extremely fun.  Give today and make a difference!

Ever wonder what it is like to have hearing loss?  How do children with hearing loss cope with the noisy environment of a school classroom?  The Vermont Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing put on a great video demonstrating what it might be like to listen through hearing aids with and without the help of an FM System.  This could also apply to adults who are often in situations with background noise.  Watch as Audiologist Jim Bombicino, MA, CCC-A explains: Hearing Aid FM Simulation Video
